The South African Community Capabilities Study is a comprehensive research project that aims to understand the multidimensional realities of poverty and well-being in poorer communities in South Africa. It fills in the gaps in existing official and large-scale studies by collecting data about various dimensions of quality of life beyond just socioeconomic factors.
The study examines the quality of basic services delivery in areas such as housing, health, safety, and education. It also explores the availability and accessibility of facilities, including media and technology. The project assesses the impact of government programs on personal and household well-being, as well as financial literacy and money management skills.
The study also looks at issues related to empowerment, inclusive governance, community solidarity, and civil society involvement. Consumer behaviour and brand loyalty, religion, culture, and human rights, social networks and circles of influence, and entrepreneurial capacity and access to an enabling environment are also examined in detail.
By taking this comprehensive approach, the South African Community Capabilities Study provides a more holistic understanding of poverty and well-being in poorer communities. The information collected can be used to inform policy decisions and guide interventions aimed at improving the quality of life in these communities.
